Carbon Canyon

No, I was not happy waking myself up at 6:30 am. I'm so spoiled!! Then waking up the kids at 6:50 am. They are so spoiled!! We headed out to Brea for an 8:30 am hike. We arrived at Carbon Canyon at 7:50 am, guess I was a little too early. This was probably the most fun we have had on a guided hike. Why did we drive 40 minutes inland to go hiking? Did you know that we have Redwood Trees in Southern California? I would go again! We started the hike looking at and listening to a California Thrasher high in a tree. The trail was lined with Mustard Flowers and Poison Hemlock. We saw occasional Elderberry Trees and lots of Milk Weed. There was a Castor Plant, the ones they used to plant to extract Castor Oil for lamps, amazing! Tino and I discovered an inhabited hole, out came a very large Jerusalem Beetle to say "hello." We of course saw many rabbits and stink bugs. We were educated about the ladybug beetle. We saw the three phases of life all within 6 inches of each other, first the larvae, then the beetle in hibernation, then a beautiful red ladybug beetle.
At the end of the trail was the Redwood Forest of Southern California. It smelled like Christmas!
After the hike, we arrived back at the lake, and there was a Great Blue Heron flying over and walking along the edge of the water.
